We also lost some time in configuring and troubleshooting Solaris servers as they tended to be more complex than our Debian Linux servers.

Three or so years ago when I was managing Solaris boxes, this was certainly the case. At least for what was right in front of you. This was because Solaris had a poor package management system, poor patch installation and more.

At least, out of the box, it did.

It certainly didn't have a nifty front-end like apt (though I did hear rumors about them porting apt to Solaris). This is where older versions of RedHat fell down, too.

There are packages available for Debian that'll upgrade a system automatically, but, yeah, no nice gui front end to manage a bunch of servers.

At least, nothing Debian will sell you.

But, if you're willing to pay RedHat for RHN, then you'd probably be willing to pay a third-party like Perfect Order to manage your Solaris boxes, right?
